What Pictures Don't Reveal...
If you take a look at those before pictures of Scott and I above, you will see me carrying around an extra 6% body fat from where I am now and Scott was being held back with an extra 14% body fat.
You can see the visible differences in our physiques, but what those pictures don't reveal is just how much the excess fat was effecting our relationship and our lives.
Just the other day Scott was standing in front of the mirror with his shirt off and he shared something with me that he had never revealed before...
He told me how embarrassed he used to be when he looked in the mirror, how uncomfortable it felt to barely squeeze into his jeans and how he felt like such a fraud because he was a personal fitness trainer and he had gained 40 pounds of fat.
But here's what shocked me...
Scott revealed that he was embarrassed for me to see him naked and that's why he stopped initiating any sexual contact and would actually shy away from it.
...and here I thought that our plummeting sex life was all because of me.
We Were Unconsciously Sabotaging Each Other
We must have tried to lose weight a dozen times in the past, but each time we would fall off the wagon. That's pretty crazy for a couple who is well educated in fitness, nutrition, and the mental component of fat loss. We're experts in the field and yet we couldn't stick to a program for more than 6 weeks.
It took us a little while, but finally we discovered that we were sabotaging each other. Every time that Scott was heading out the door to go to the gym I would make a subtle comment like, "Must be nice to get to workout!" Another comment I often made was, "I love you just the way you are." This immediately triggered Scott's defenses and would lead to an arguement of some kind. But what Scott didn't realize is that this was my cry for help. I wanted the time to workout as well. It was also my way of saying, "Hey, I haven't seen you all day...can't you just stay home and talk to me?"
I felt so disrespected and misunderstood. I wanted to get out of the house too! I felt taken advantage of. Here I was left behind when I could have really used a break from the demands of two little kids all day. Day after day, he would walk in from work, eat, shower, and then run out the door to the gym. I became very bitter and resentful because my needs were not being met. I needed a break too. I was jealous. I wanted to have that freedom from the kids too and to finally feel in shape again.
I know now that my anger also stemmed from the fact that we barely had a couple of minutes for a decent conversation without being interrupted by the kids. I needed some adult conversation! I wanted to spend more time alone with him to catch up on our day, and talk about the concerns I had with the kids.
The Aha Moment...
It finally hit us... all along we had been approaching weight loss as individuals and we were working against each other. It was time for us to work together as a team toward a common goal... and that common goal was much more than just losing weight. We wanted to bond intimately as a couple and trigger the sparks we used to have when we found it impossible to keep our hands off of each other.
Once we decided to commit to working out together, we also commited to eating wholesome, unprocessed foods 90% of the time. We truly pushed ourselves to get in the best shape that we could for a 12 week period. It was so much fun because we would challenge each other to see who could get the best results each week. We would weigh in together and get really excited. It was so encouraging for me to have Scott working along side of me because he could understand my challenges and victories. During this time period, we decided to put our motivation to the test by scheduling a photo shoot! We had never done this before but figured why not? We knew that we needed to schedule some sort of event to give us a deadline. We stuck to our plan the best that we could, and, wow, did the perseverance pay off! Our results were astounding! We were so proud of ourselves!

I hung the bikini on our bedroom door so it would be the first thing that I saw in the morning and the last thing that I looked at before I went to bed. It had been a very long time since I had ever worn a bikini and I was really looking forward to wearing it with confidence.
The pants that you see Scott wearing in this picture are the same pair that he was desperately trying to squeeze into. It's amazing how tight they were on him before we began our transformation.
It was actually very entertaining to see his pants get looser every week to the point where they were falling off him if he didn't wear a belt. Our children would laugh at him and say that they could see his underwear!
This journey has definitely had a positive impact on our children. It was great to see their reaction to the photos and the appreciation of the human body. It's also been great to see our children get involved in our workout sessions. Our kids often do HIIT with us. They'll be right along our side performing burpees, skipping, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and even running up and down our stairs! They have actually become our daily reminder of fitness because they know we love to chase them around the house or yard and that we are always eager to play a game of tag ball with them.
